Hello Reader, I live in eastern Pennsylvania, on unceded ancestral lands of the Lenape Indigenous peoples. For more than 15 thousand years, the Lenape stewarded land from eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, to areas of New York, Connecticut, and Maryland. Find your Native Land at https://native-land.ca/ The Lenape traveled, hunted, traded, and interacted with other Nations surrounding their homelands. The word “Lenape” means “the people,” and also refers to the traditional language spoken in this region. European colonists referred to the Lenape people as the Delaware, after the river named for their first governor of the Province of Virginia: Thomas West, third Baron De La Warr. Dialects of the Lenape language once spoken include Munsee in the north and Unami in the south, and today [Delaware Nation] strives to share and preserve Lenape language and culture. Why should we learn Lenape, even if we have no ancestral ties? When I spoke with Krista Nelson, Lenape grandmother and teacher, her response was simple… “Imagine how overjoyed this land—the stones and earth beneath our feet, the breeze that sings through the trees, the water that ripples in the rivers—will feel to hear the words that reverberated throughout this area for thousands of years!” Even if you live outside of the Lenape region, this language is part of the Algonquian language family, and so may feel familiar beyond the Lenape borders. On June 16, you have a special opportunity to learn your first Lenape words and experience a taste of Lenape culture with Krista Nelson. Read more about the Lenape matrilineal culture, traditional leadership, and history here. Note: All profits from this class support Krista Nelson’s work and will be donated to an organization dedicated to preserving and educating the public about Lenape history and culture. This webinar will be recorded, and the replay will be available to all registrants. Yours in Health, Charis Lindrooth BotanicWise |
BotanicWise was founded by Charis Lindrooth with the intention of providing a forum where plant wisdom can be shared and where like-minded people can connect and build a community to steward land, medicinal plants, and supportive relationships with each other. Inspired by the work of Rosemary Gladstar, David Winston, United Plant Savers, and many internationally acclaimed teachers and organizations in the herbal renaissance, BotanicWise strives to create space for land and plant stewardship, with an inner mission to cultivate alliances between plants and people, and between people and people. We are grateful for all who participate in this expanding green movement that invites perspective on the transformation of modern health and health care in this country.
Hello Reader, For thousands of years, the Lenape people thrived across the regions now known as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York. Through the study of these hidden histories, Krista Nelson had the privilege of learning and teaching Lenape through the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, a community of descendants who have historically had to hide in plain sight. Their rich culture, long hidden, is a story of resilience and renewal. We’re excited to announce that Krista Nelson will...
Hello Reader, Plants have long been our teachers in the healing arts. In this workshop, we explore another way they speak to us, through line, pigment, and paper, remembering that art and healing are simply two languages for the same relationship. Rooted in Tony(a)’s philosophy of Art that Breathes, this four-session workshop invites herbalists, plant lovers, and creative seekers to engage with plants not only as remedies, but as creative companions. Through simple creative practices, the...
