BotanicWise

BotanicWise was founded by Charis Lindrooth with the intention of providing a forum where plant wisdom can be shared and where like-minded people can connect and build a community to steward land, medicinal plants, and supportive relationships with each other. Inspired by the work of Rosemary Gladstar, David Winston, United Plant Savers, and many internationally acclaimed teachers and organizations in the herbal renaissance, BotanicWise strives to create space for land and plant stewardship, with an inner mission to cultivate alliances between plants and people, and between people and people. We are grateful for all who participate in this expanding green movement that invites perspective on the transformation of modern health and health care in this country.

Hello Reader, You have more control over how you feel than you might think… actually, control might not be the right word…bear with me as I work through this… Herbalist Guido Masé says, “As we think about healing, we want to honor cyclical patterns inside us and apply that support in cycles. We want to do it in a way that honors the fact that we are full human beings that live in a context, both outside of us and inside of us.” When we start with listening and understanding, we build an...

Hello Reader, Last week I watched Artemis II launch to the moon. I couldn’t help myself… I was mesmerized. As the ship zoomed higher and higher, I yearned to know how it felt to be one of the astronauts on board. The moon, the stars, the planets are beautiful mysteries to me. When I look up at the night sky, I feel small, yet tethered to them—I am filled with awe. But what stirred me most was not the rocket blast-off, the amazing technology on display, or even the images of the dark side of...

Hello Reader, Have you ever watched the caterpillar of a monarch butterfly weave a chrysalis? It hangs there—golden-green, quietly luminous—suspended among the blossoms of its favorite plant, milkweed. For thousands of years, this relationship has held: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly… and milkweed, always there, a steady companion in the turning. A living expression of the Gift Cycle. Creativity. Transformation. Rest. Renewal. We see these patterns everywhere—in stories of...

Hello Reader, Earlier this week, I wrote about the [ecological mind]—our thoughts as a living exchange between us and the natural world. If the ecological mind suggests that our thoughts and feelings arise through relationship, then tonic herbs offer a beautiful way to enter that relationship. Unlike quick-acting remedies meant to suppress or override symptoms, tonic herbs work slowly, subtly, and cumulatively. They don’t impose change. They invite resilience. 🌱 What makes an herb “Tonic”?...

Hello Reader, I’ve been thinking…uh oh! Mostly thinking about brains—April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, after all (and every moment is PD awareness for those of us facing its challenges). I’m always looking for ways to reframe what’s going on between my ears, so when I heard the phrase, “the ecological mind,” I grew curious. What if your mind isn’t just something that exists inside your head? What if it’s something that happens between you and the world—shaped moment by moment by your...
