The Living Page with Tony Lemos

Hello Reader,

Plants have long been our teachers in the healing arts. In this workshop, we explore another way they speak to us, through line, pigment, and paper, remembering that art and healing are simply two languages for the same relationship.

Rooted in Tony(a)’s philosophy of Art that Breathes, this four-session workshop invites herbalists, plant lovers, and creative seekers to engage with plants not only as remedies, but as creative companions. Through simple creative practices, the making of a handmade artist book, and eco-printing with botanical materials, pigment making, we will explore how plants can guide the creative process and leave their own traces upon the page.

Together, we will create a personal artist book that becomes a living record of these encounters where plant forms, impressions, and reflections gather over time. Rather than focusing on artistic skill, the emphasis is on attention, curiosity, and the cultivation of a deeper relationship with the living world.

Participants will leave with new creative practices, a handmade book filled with botanical marks, and a renewed sense of how art can become another pathway for listening to the wisdom of plants. Over time, the page itself begins to breathe, holding the traces of plants, attention, and relationship.

You will learn:

  • How creative practice can deepen their relationship with plants.
  • Foundational techniques for creating a handmade artist book that can serve as a personal space for botanical observation, reflection, and creative exploration.
  • A simple eco-printing process using botanical materials to create natural impressions and integrate plant marks and pigment into their artist books.

About Tony(a) Lemos

Tonya Lemos is a multidisciplinary artist, herbalist, and educator whose work explores the intersection of art, ecology, and plant knowledge. Rooted in a lifelong relationship with the natural world, her practice—Art that Breathes—investigates collaborative image-making with plants through botanical printing, natural pigments, and experimental printmaking processes.

Lemos is the founder of Blazing Star Herbal School in Conway, Massachusetts, where she has taught herbalism and earth-based healing traditions for over two decades. Drawing on both traditional plant knowledge and contemporary ecological art practices, her work invites a slower, more reciprocal relationship between creative practice and the living world.

BotanicWise

BotanicWise was founded by Charis Lindrooth with the intention of providing a forum where plant wisdom can be shared and where like-minded people can connect and build a community to steward land, medicinal plants, and supportive relationships with each other. Inspired by the work of Rosemary Gladstar, David Winston, United Plant Savers, and many internationally acclaimed teachers and organizations in the herbal renaissance, BotanicWise strives to create space for land and plant stewardship, with an inner mission to cultivate alliances between plants and people, and between people and people. We are grateful for all who participate in this expanding green movement that invites perspective on the transformation of modern health and health care in this country.
