The Vicious Cycle of Inflammation

Hello Reader,

Last week, we listened to Part 1 of Paul Bergner’s 2-Part Workshop, Reclaiming Energy: A Holistic Approach to Mitochondrial Health. After learning how significantly mitochondrial damage can affect every aspect of our well-being, we’re very excited to hear Paul’s protocols for vitality in Part 2!

There’s still time to sign up and watch the replay of Part 1 before we dive into Part 2 next Wednesday, May 27, at 6 PM ET.

During Part 1, Paul explained the Inflammatory Vicious Cycle:

What are mitochondria?
Mitochondria are tiny parts inside your cells that make energy. They have their own special DNA (mitochondrial DNA) that helps them work properly.

Mitochondrial DNA is fragile:
Unlike the main DNA in your cells, mitochondrial DNA can’t fix itself when it gets damaged. Over time, damage builds up, and mitochondria don’t work well.

How does inflammation affect mitochondria?
When your body is inflamed (like when you have an infection), this can hurt mitochondria and their DNA. Damaged mitochondria don’t work right.

The vicious cycle:
If damaged mitochondria aren’t removed properly, they leak pieces of DNA and proteins that look like germs to your immune system. This makes your body create more inflammation.

Why doesn’t the body clean up damaged mitochondria?
Usually, cells can clean up damaged mitochondria in a process called mitophagy. But inflammation can stop this cleaning process, so more damaged mitochondria pile up.

What happens next?
More damaged mitochondria cause more inflammation, which causes more damage. This cycle keeps going and can lead to long-term problems.

Why does this matter?
This helps explain symptoms like feeling tired after exercise, muscle pain, joint pain, and brain fog—especially since your brain has lots of mitochondria.

How do we stop this vicious cycle from overwhelming us?

BotanicWise

BotanicWise was founded by Charis Lindrooth with the intention of providing a forum where plant wisdom can be shared and where like-minded people can connect and build a community to steward land, medicinal plants, and supportive relationships with each other. Inspired by the work of Rosemary Gladstar, David Winston, United Plant Savers, and many internationally acclaimed teachers and organizations in the herbal renaissance, BotanicWise strives to create space for land and plant stewardship, with an inner mission to cultivate alliances between plants and people, and between people and people. We are grateful for all who participate in this expanding green movement that invites perspective on the transformation of modern health and health care in this country.

Through the study of these hidden histories, Krista Nelson had the privilege of learning and teaching Lenape through the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, a community of descendants who have historically had to hide in plain sight. Their rich culture, long hidden, is a story of resilience and renewal. We’re excited to announce that Krista Nelson will...

Hello Reader, Plants have long been our teachers in the healing arts. In this workshop, we explore another way they speak to us, through line, pigment, and paper, remembering that art and healing are simply two languages for the same relationship. Rooted in Tony(a)’s philosophy of Art that Breathes, this four-session workshop invites herbalists, plant lovers, and creative seekers to engage with plants not only as remedies, but as creative companions. Through simple creative practices, the...
